Why Do You Need to Develop Your Writing Skills Anyway?

boy is writing with a pencilMany students usually ask themselves while working on an especially exasperating essay: “Why all the fuss? What’s the use of learning how to write if am not going to need it in my future career?”

To a certain degree, they are right. If you plan to become an IT developer, you probably needn’t spend as much time on essay writing as a future journalist. However, it doesn’t mean that writing is useless. In fact, there is a number of very sound reasons not to neglect it during your school and college years. Here are some of them.

1. You Are Often Judged Based on Your Writing

You will often find yourself communicating by means of writing, both for personal and professional reasons. You will have to write a resume that will or will not land you a dream job. You use emails, texts, messengers and other means of communication every day. You may think that you don’t need any special skills for this, but there are always people who will judge you based on how you write, and poor writing skills can provide an awful first impression.

2. Writing is a Marketable Skill

You may have certain plans for your future that aren’t connected with writing, but you can never be sure that they will happen exactly as you think. And if you have writing skills at your disposal, it means that you are competent in an additional field, which may come in handy if you ever fall on hard times.

3. Writing Improves Your Language Skills

Writing is inseparably connected with all the other language skills, including speaking and cognition. By learning how to write you will by contiguity improve your ability to express yourself in speech, which in turn is always helpful if your ambitions include achieving higher status.

4. Writing Is Useful for Self-Promotion

We live in the age of global connection, when content produced for the Internet can go a long way in improving one’s standing, promoting one’s personal brand and, in general, making them known in social circles beyond their usual reach. You won’t be always capable of hiring a PR specialist to do this job, especially in the early stages of your career, and it is often said that if you want something done right, you should do it yourself. Self-promotion is one of the areas for which this maxim is especially true.

5. Writing Is Fun

Last but not the least, when you know how to write, you will find tremendous pleasure in this process. There is something exceedingly liberating about being able to express yourself through words, and we live in the age when it is unprecedentedly easy to make your voice heard by others. This, in turn, can bring you acquaintances with numerous interesting, fascinating and useful people, thus enriching your life and probably paving a road for future achievements.

As you may see, writing is far from being a useless skill in a modern world. Even if you don’t plan on using it to make a living, mastering it can improve your life in dozens other ways.
