The writer Ryan Boudinot impressed public with his essay laying into the courses of creative writing. Boudinot has just quit his teaching on the Master of Fine Arts program in the United States of America, and decided to fully enjoy the freedom and share some of the home truths. The essay of Boudinot caused a real furor all over the web. Here are some of the main points of the creative writing suggestions provided by Ryan Boudinot.
– Either there is some talent in you…or not. The thing is that writers are not all born equal. The author says that really talented people are exceedingly rare. According to the words of Ryan Boudinot, he can count really gifted students on one hand fingers.
– Make sure to start it when you are young, otherwise – you will most likely to fail. You have to be simply crazy about reading and books as a little kid in order to set the neural architecture needed to write your own piece of literature. So, if you’re 20 or something now – it is probably too late for you to get started. Or, maybe your name is Haruki Murakami.
– No need to complain that you do not have enough time. Students, who are wondering about how to deal with time management, strict deadlines and so on, when trying to write, should probably give up and find the other hobby, says Boudinot.
– Read, read and read. According Ryan Boudinot, he had a special student, who was a “Real Deal”. The guy successfully finished the assigned books earlier than the rest of the students, and approached Boudinot for some other big novels to work on between the semesters. The man provided the list that included “Gravity’s Rainbow”, “Infinite Jest” and “2666” and as Boudinot said, these works of literature were mentioned almost as some joke. But the fact is that the student read all three novels in order to generate an extra-credit essay. The situation with the bad students is quite the opposite, says the expert. As a rule, the lazy ones do not want to deal with books that make them think or work hard.
– Writing class won’t necessarily help. “Just because you were severely abused when you were a little kid does not make your inability to use the same verb tense for more than three sentences any more bearable” says Ryan Boudinot. What is more, the expert says that the very moment he has to deal with 600 pages of students’ memoirs full of errors he wishes that “abused one” suffered even more.
The essay written by the author has radically divided internet community into the group of those, who support Boudinot, and the group of haters ready to crucify him. If you are a former or a current creative writing student, make sure to have your own viewpoint on what Boudinot thinks. Who knows, maybe he will show you the right way to your real vocation.
